Leopard. We went to an an animal sanctuary in Namibia that takes care of wounded/orphaned/sick animals. They’re kept in large (read dozens and dozens of acres) fenced-off areas. Twice each day, they’re fed by the Guides. The animals gather around for lunch when they hear the call of the guide aso we got to see them up close and personal.
I long ago realized that the world order according to Karen is: 1.) Animals. 2.) plants and flowers; and then 3.) Me. It was a given therefore that any trip we take to Africa has to have plenty of opps to see the animals. South Africa and Namibia did not disappoint. If I could give one piece of advice to people who are thinking about where to go next, I would say go to Africa and see the animals before its too late. They are wondrous.
Lion jumps for. his lunch
It’s not until you pull back a little that you see how big he is and how high he jumps.
Cheetah: The fastest of them all. Can do 60 mph for short spurts
Giraffes are huge creatures, but surprisingly graceful. This was taken from a safari jeep on the farm.
This is a straight-horned African Antelope. There are many types of antelope: springbok impala, kudu, water buck and sable.
We were invited to spend a weekend at a Namibian farm.Shot by yours truly INSIDE the corral.
This lamb is about the size of Squirt
Rhino less than 15 feet away
Elephants at midnight. This crew eventually numbered more than 20.
Typical scene: a herd of wildebeests V E R Y S L O W L Y make their way to the water hole, one after another
Two other patterns are common. Zebra often hang with the wildebeests. We’ve seen this in Namibia and South Africa. Also, its common to see all different animals drinking at the water hole at the same time. Most don’t pay any attention to the others. Admittedly, we haven’t seen a lion cruise in…
My art shot. Midnight at the Etosha water hole with a rhino in the background.
You don’t have to travel thousands of miles to see the animals up close. There is a 24 hr webcam streaming from the Okaukuejo water hole: Etoshe Camera
